Echo.

This re-design is truely a legacy piece for Metalworks. Our client wanted her 30 years Metalworks’ Married Metal ring, made by the former goldsmith and owner of Metalworks, Neil Aird, redone with a contemporary flare ….while keeping the intergrity of the married metal design and setting a larger diamond.

Steve approached the new design by rolling out the original band into a flat sheet of gold. After shaping the band, he hammered it into a new ,slightly ant-clastic form. Then set the new diamond.

If you look, the new band has an echo of its former self but, it’s also a completely new and fresh Married-Metal design from Metalworks.

This graceful curving pendant ties together the legacy of a family – Grandparents to Granddaughter.  The inspiration came from a simple wedding band that was exchanged in matrimony in another century. The simple wedding band united the grandparents in love and later it will unite the granddaughter to their love and memory.

This Legacy commission was requested by the sister of the deceased grandmother. She sent us drawings and the wedding band along with the wishes that the ring be transformed into the initials of the granddaughter which are A. S.  The goldsmith forged the letters out of the gold ring and hand-formed additional gold motifs to create the overall design. The wedding band, in its new form, was presented to the granddaughter –honouring and tying one generation to another generation.

Fidelity n 1. faithfulness, loyalty.

If you carefully look at this picture, you will see the inscription ‘fidelity’ inscribed on the pendant in platinum. The pendant was transformed from the client’s father’s wedding band and she requested the word fidelity be the focus of the repurposed piece as it brings back memories of her father.

To create her pendant, the gold band was cut in one spot and then forged on a long horned anvil into a pleasing shape. Then her three family opals where set into the bezels that were designed for the pendant with the word ‘fidelity’ front and center of the design.

In this pendant past and present family are honour through word and design.

peruvian engagement bracelet, red, and silver

The Peruvian Engagement Bracelet

Elise and Graham had been dating for four years when they decided to travel together to Peru and trek the Andes. The trek they followed is called the Salcantay which ends at the famous Micchu Pichu. It was at Micchu Pichu, high in the Andes, that Graham proposed to Elise. In keeping with the Peruvian cultural traditions, he proposed to her with a Peruvian engagement bracelet.

These bracelets are made with seeds from a plant that grows in the Amazon. They are dyed red and black: these colours representing the duality of the masculine and feminine coming together. —The marriage of two people.

Unfortunately, Elise lost her orginal proposal bracelet. But, luckily, her finance bought more that one bracelet because, at the time when he was buying it, he couldn’t decide which one she would like better, so he bought a few!

Elise brought one of the ‘other’ bracelets to Metalworks and we were able to make her a new engagement bracelet in sterling silver using the traditional Peruvian seeds which, most importantly, honours the spirit of the original bracelet.

Fresh New Look

The customer wanted a fresh new look for her engagement diamond but, also wanted to keep the original wedding band that had script engraved on the inside. The .40 carat diamond was removed from the customer’s original engagement ring. It was re-set into a modern style bezel setting that sits on a new hand built wide gold band. The orignal wedding band with the written engraving was incorporated into the new ring intact. A beautiful combination of old and new.

Combining Wedding Bands

The client wanted her engagement and wedding bands combined into one ring with details of the original two bands incorporated into the new design. The white gold inner band was hand constructed to echo the style and form of the original yellow gold band. The original yellow band was shaped to wrap a-symmetrically around the white band. The solitaire diamond was set into a bezel setting which frames and sets off the diamond and the undulating forms of the band.

This gold solitaire ring represents and honours two family generations by blending the client’s wedding band and a family heirloom diamond into one piece of jewellery. The diamond was formerly set into the vintage solitaire ring shown in the above picture. It was modernized by a simple bezel setting that complements the white gold inset pieces on each side of the band.
